STOP Making Things Up to Justify your FEARs in Business and Invest in Yourself
No matter what type of business you have, you should understand traditional business practices. Be responsible with finances and project financials for the year. Being successful in any business will require you to make an investment in yourself and your business. You need to stop making things up to justify your fears in business and take action.
Many people want to sell products they haven't tried, saying things like "when I make the money I will buy them." The problem is you won't have the knowledge and enthusiasm to really support others. And don't get me started on those who think Network Marketing is a pyramid scheme. You have a business if you make money from the sale of a product or service. And NWM pays you to share their products.
I want you to think differently about your business today and how it's not that different from traditional businesses, such as Nordstrom's. To build a successful business, pay attention to these five areas.
1. Project your financials: No matter what kind of business you have, you must project your financials for the year and be responsible with finances. By doing this, you will be able to plan for the future and make informed decisions.
2. Build my personal brand: It's important to build a personal brand that stands out and offers value to the people you serve. To connect with your audience, you should share from an authentic place.
3. Try the products you sell: Direct sales and network marketing are similar to traditional retail models in that you should always try the products you are selling. By doing this, you will be able to provide your customers with better recommendations based on your understanding of the products.
4. Invest in yourself and your business: Investing in your business is the key to long-term success. Take risks and pursue your goals despite your fears.
5. Think outside the box: Try new things and think outside the box. Implementing effective business and marketing strategies will allow you to leave a lasting legacy.

We're gonna talk about traditional business practices, okay? We're gonna talk about things that Nordstroms are doing. We're gonna talk about things that both products and service based businesses do. People are not talking about traditional business and marketing practices in these types of industries, and I wanted to share some thoughts with you today to provide some freedom for you and your business. Hey, hey, it's your girl, Emmy Cornwell, Instagram biz coach and social selling expert.
Welcome to the Hey, hey, Emmy show. This is a podcast where we talk about all things that will be helpful for you and your business. Everything from Instagram tips and tricks to health hacks to relationships, and definitely some Jesus, basically everything in between Proverbs 31 and Tupac. I am so excited to party with you in each and every episode because ain't no party like a Hey, hey Emmy party.
Can I get. All right. Let's get into it, sister.
Hey. Hey. What's going on? How are you? A sister girl, Emmy Cornwell here, and I am just getting out of an acupuncture appointment, so I'm a little bit like. And I was thinking about this as I was relaxing on the table, but also as I've been having some conversations and then just my many years of experience, I am a personal branding specialist.
I am a marketing mentor. I am a business owner, soon to be a mom. I have it so many different hats that I wear. But here's what I wanna talk to you and share some thoughts with you today to provide some freedom. For you and your business. Okay? One of the businesses that I own and that I do is in the direct sales and the network marketing space.
Now, if you're not in the direct sales or the network marketing space, that's okay. You're still gonna find value in this because we're gonna talk about traditional business practices, okay? We're gonna talk about things that Nordstroms are doing. We're gonna talk about things that both products and service-based businesses do.
Okay? So if you are in business, no matter if you're in a product-based, A service-based business, an online based business in digital marketing with 2023. Highest paid job is digital marketing. Or if you're in a traditional business, right? Maybe you have a more traditional like brick and mortar, right? I just got out of acupuncture appointment.
She has a traditional brick and mortar build building business where I go in, she provides a service and I pay her. If you Googled what business was, A brand, a business, a someone, an individual, okay? Maybe you're an llc, an S corp, maybe you don't even have that, but somehow you're providing a business and a service, and then you're ultimately getting paid for it.
There's an exchange of things that are happening, okay? So for instance, for my coaching business, I provide a service and coach and train people, and they pay. I have people who hire me to be a speaker. Cause that's another thing I do. Okay. People will hire me to train their teams to speak on their stages that I go do the service and then they pay me.
They pay me for that. Right. But the other business in the direct sales industry that I am a part of, that I do in a way that essentially is affiliate marketing. Is product base. Okay? I promote, I sell, I market a product that I actually didn't have to create. Thank goodness cuz I am no scientist. I share it and sell it with you.
You take it, I get a commission. That's a business. So I'm not sure, you know specifically, I am gonna hit on a little bit of direct sales and network marketing because who woke up one day and decided. For whatever reason that network marketing direct sales wasn't a viable business because I don't know about you.
If you're in this space and you're doing it correctly, you're building a personal brand, you're standing out, you're sharing from an authentic place of your true identity, and you provide a product or a service to someone, you get a paycheck. Hello? That's a business. Do you have to file taxes? That's a business.
So I don't know who woke up one day and decided for whatever reason that it's. So if we're agreeing to agree that is a business, then why sister, girl are you asking questions like this? Oh man, well, I didn't do very good this month, or I didn't hit my goals, or I didn't hit my ranks, right? We're in a new month, we're in March.
I'm just gonna quit. It doesn't work. What the heck do you think Nordstrom, when they have a down. Is like, Nope, we're just gonna close up shop. It's not working. No, absolutely not. No Nordstroms or your local. Right. During Covid, even there were businesses that Yes, unfortunately had to decide to close based on some financial.
Losses that were really happening, but there were some that took the hit and are still kicking today. Okay? So it doesn't matter if you have an online business or a brick and mortar business just because you have a quote unquote bad month. That's not how this works. Ultimately, in my business. Because I get to design what that looks like.
I really have an 11th month calendar in regards to my business, because I wanna take off December's every year. It's my birthday. I love Christmas. Okay. So when I'm looking and projecting my financials, which real business owners do, okay, and those are the people I wanna look, look for, that I am looking for in regards to social retail and the affiliate marketing.
I do that, the wellness company. I don't want anyone who just. $500 a month now. Oh, $500 can definitely change your life. Absolutely. That can cover some really real bills. I used to be on food stamps. I understand the power of $500, but I don't want someone on the street who has no business mindset or savviness that they understand these types of principles that are just traditional business principals.
I went to school for communication. With a business econ minor. I have a master's in support management. I've been doing marketing essentially my whole life right in, in whatever job that I do. So I'm looking for someone who has this understanding that as you project financials for your year, you understand that November is gonna be the highest month of your year.
So let's just say you make 10 k, November. Which has happened. Okay, say you make that, but you know, December you're gonna take off. But December also, just like traditionally speaking, is not the best month because you just come off something like Black Friday in regards to the sales calendar, well, you can't expect for your budget, your finances, your expenses, that December's gonna look the same.
So when you're projecting, you take that throughout the whole year. Okay? Again, you can do this. With any type of business, and you should be, this is called being responsible with your financials. Uh, here's the other thing though that really kind of spurred this conversation. Are you ready for it? Okay. I have a gal who's taken a look at doing social retail.
She's studying to, um, be in the medical field, and fitness and wellness is important to her. It makes sense that she would. We used to say all the time, like br not trainer, personal trainer, no-brainer. Like you wanna have a product that you can offer your clients, right? It's just like in my coaching business, I have different quote unquote products.
They're digital that I'm able to offer my clients to see whatever is the best fit for them. So anyway, she's like, here's the question she asked, do I need to spend money essentially, is what she's saying. Do I need to buy product to start my business? No, that's one of the beau. Of network marketing and direct sales is though entry to start your own business is very, very low.
There's no barriers, really. Like you don't have to be a certain race. You don't have to be a certain gender. You don't have to be a certain socioeconomic, you don't have to have a certain education. You could live in a trailer, you could be homeless these days. Right. You know, I have like, there are, so it's like the even playing field is this.
So no. Do you need, yeah, you need $40. That's what it is to start, right? But do you need to buy products in order to start selling in order to start your business? The answer is no. But actually the answer is yes because how? It's wild to me that people think that they can sell a product that they've never tried or used personally.
Now I believe I can do that cuz I'm a good sales. And I'll get some success, but one that's not everybody. Two, that's not long lasting, and that's just short-term gain. And I don't know about you, but I'm not here for a short-term game. I'm here for a long lasting impact. Legacy leaving success results.
Okay. And again, those are the types of people that I'm looking for. And so to partner with, to do business with, to have fun with, to create content with, to talk to people, to build relationships, all those types of things is essentially what I'm doing in business. So I think it's wild. Would Nordstrom's, right?
Cause I'm always comparing the direct sales industry. I like to do this, the direct sales industry to the traditional. Model things like Nor, and I just love Nordstroms. Okay. Am I wearing, so this is from Nordstroms, I'm sure. Something else I'm wearing. My undies are from Nordstroms, hanky Pinky, by the way, protip, maybe tmi, best undies you will ever purchase.
They have lasted me through. Multiple different weight gains, multiple different and ups and downs, multiple different size, size changes. It's also the underwear that I have worn were pregnant. I have not had to buy any type of maternity underwear. Okay. That is a free tip for all you women out there. Get yourself some hanky pinks at Nordstrom's.
Would Nordstrom's try to sell a pair of jeans that they don't have in their. Okay, so we're talking about comparing network marketing or direct sales business to a traditional retail business like Nordstrom's, like Old Navy, like Ross, like a local boutique in your town. Okay? Would they try and sell something to you if it wasn't in their store, where you could physically see it, where you could try it on yourself, where you could take it home and get your own, quote unquote result in testimony and experience with it, but not try to do that because that doesn't work.
So why, if you're wanting to start your business, do you think in your right mind that you can sell a product you haven't tried yourself? And here's, here's the excuse people make. And this is linked to fear. And that's why I title this, stop making and justifying your Fears. In business. She said, oh, well I wanna see if this works.
I wanna see once I start making income, once I start making money, then I know it works, then I'll buy the products. No, that's back password thinking. And again, you could get some results that may happen, but most likely you're not. And so then this is what's gonna happen cuz we're humans and our brain tricks us.
You're like, oh, it's not, no one's buying this. It's not working. It's not for me. This is a pyramid scheme. This is a scam. I'm just not a good salesperson. No, like honestly, don't take it that personal. You just didn't make the right decision at the top of the business journey that you're on to invest in yourself, to invest in your business.
What you have to do, if you open up a McDonald's franchise, you know what you do. You have to pay tons of money. To do that. So why do we think that? Because it's just online. Online, and we're moving to the social selling e-commerce space and all kind of direct sales and network marketing that we think we can do that.
No, that's an excuse because you're scared it's not gonna work. You're scared you're gonna fail. You're scared of what Aunt Susan thinks. You're scared of what Cousin Betty thinks, or your friend, you know Stephanie from high school. Right? But why? Why is it? Okay? And then another message here, here's the other message that I got and I'm gonna wrap it up, is I just got a message from a gal who just started her cleaning business.
Cause I am searching for a new housekeeper. Why do we celebrate her starting her new business? You know what she has to do? She probably has to get a business license, which by the way, Make. You have to have money for that. She has to see all her supplies. You have to have money for that. She has to do advertising, marketing.
You don't necessarily have to have money for that, right? I teach organic marketing here. Why do we celebrate that? But we don't celebrate other forms of business where there's lower berries to entry. It's because our business mind, not everyone has one, but something is off and something's not connecting, and we're justifying our.
We're justifying our fears, and that's what I want you to stop. So whether you're currently in business and you're justifying fears in other places of your business, stop it. If you're looking at adding something business wise to what you're already doing, maybe a nine to five, maybe you do wanna quit your job by my friend who just started her own cleaning business.
Um, or, you know, here's the other thing, bloggers. Okay, let's just talk, let's, this is the last example. Why do you think business and brands send bloggers their product for them to share? Yes, it is for them to share, but it's so that they can share from an authentic place, from their own personal experience of using the product.
Gone are the days of a celebrity like a Kim Kardashian, putting their name, getting. To just put their name on a product they've never used. That was, there was a season, like when Paris Hilton was blowing up, when Kim Kardashian was with Paris Hilton. When Lindsay Lohan and Britney Spears were so like the two thousands, that was a thing.
People would pay celebrities and they wouldn't even actually use the products, but because they're a celebrity, people would pay normal. People like us would go buy the stuff. Gone are those days. We are in the influencer marketing stage in the real life people. That's why I always tell you too, is build your s, build your brand from who you are.
People wanna buy from you. People buy from you first before they buy your product. They don't want all this BS like fake crap. They wanna know that you've taken it, that you've tried. That you liked it. That's why businesses and brands send bloggers and influencers and micro influencers and, and people like me, I do brand deals cuz they want to tap into your audience, to your network from a place you have tried the product.
So again, when you're starting a business or your business is wild to me, that you would think that you don't need the product or that you don't wanna try it. It's just weird. Okay. Stop making direct sales weird. Stop making network marketings weird. It's compare it to real business. Do real business tactics and strategies and theories and principles, and you're gonna be successful.
But overall, in life, in business, stop making excuses. Stop justifying your fears so that you can just not. What you know is gonna be helpful for you, your life, your family, your bigger why, your vision, your calling, your purpose, why you're here. Okay? So those are some things I would like to offer you today to think about in regards to business because when it comes to me and how I mentor and coach, I want you to be successful.
I want you to think outside of the box. I want you to do things that are, like I said, going to give you long lasting legacy impacting results. So if that's you, if that's something that you're digging, you're into and you wanna make money and have fun doing it. I love to make that cash money. Either way.
Hopefully this is value for you. It's what your biggest takeaway was. I'm excited to chat with you. I'm excited to hear what you took away because hopefully you did take away something, cuz I'm not gonna lie. This is some good stuff and this is not what's being talked about. People are not talking about traditional business and marketing practices in these types of industries and they're just allowing people to.
Live in their fears. They're allowing people to because they just wanna make a buck or they just wanna sign someone up, or they just wanna get to the next thing. That's not who I am. That's not what I'm about. Love you so much. Chat with you soon.
